Heat Wave Project
Deepening knowledge of the effects of projected climate change on the municipality of Lisbon by the end of the century
The municipality of Lisbon submitted an application to the Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources (POSEUR) - Axis "Promoting adaptation to climate change and risk prevention and management", and obtained ERDF/FC co-financing approval for its implementation.
This project aims to deepen knowledge of the effects of climate change projected for the municipality of Lisbon by the end of the century, with regard to the scenario of an increase in average annual temperature, especially maximum temperatures, through the production of thematic cartography relating to Heat Waves (OC) and Urban Heat Islands (ICU), as well as the design of tools to support planning and the city's municipal adaptation and mitigation strategy.
A set of instruments was produced for the municipality of Lisbon:
Lot 1 of the cartography has been completed and approved by the Directorate General for Territory. Lots 2, 3 and 4 have been completed and are in the process of being approved by the Directorate General for Territory.
The three-dimensional model has been completed.
See the report for each phase:
The study consists of five phases, all of which have been completed. Its aim is to assess the heat wave regime in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and the Urban Heat Island in the current and future climate.
The properties of the heatwave were identified (frequency, duration, intensity and number of days) and the Urban Heat Islands were also characterized using numerical simulations with the WRF(Weather Research and Forecasting) model with parameterization of the urban canopy forced by climate models.
The study consists of two phases, both of which have been completed. Phase 1 refers to the current scenario and Phase 2 to the future scenario

- Future Urban Climate Maps - Report (Phase 2)
The study consists of three phases, the third of which is currently being completed. Its aim is to deepen our knowledge of the current situation in terms of the city's thermal behavior, by producing thematic cartography that allows us to understand the effects, namely Heat Waves (CW) and Urban Heat Island (UHI), and also to design management tools for the city's planning and adaptation.

Note: For the most severe future climate scenario (RCP8.5), the Temperature Pattern Maps are presented in two ways: one with the study base - 100x100 grid, and the other with isolines, as it is more graphically expressive. The differences between the two maps stem from the interpolation required to construct the isolines from the grid.

Microclimate Simulation - Report (Phase 2)
Cenarization and Mapping of UCI Mitigation Measures - Report (Phase 3)
The study consists of three phases, all of which have been completed. Its aim is to assess the Urban Heat Island at the meso and micro scale as a function of the variation in anthropogenic factors with implications for the city's energy balance. This scenario exercise, based on physical modeling (current and future city), allowed simulations to be carried out to adopt strategies to reduce the thermal discomfort associated with the Urban Heat Island effect, namely the modification of surfaces in the city.
- Development of records of anthropogenic variables, microclimate simulations for 2 current critical areas and current climate, with simulation of mitigation measures (Phase 1)
- Microclimate simulations for 2 current critical areas and current climate, with simulation of mitigation measures (Phase 2)
- Microclimate simulations for a critical area in the future climate scenario (Phase 3)
