Lisbon Urban Rehabilitation Area
Since April 26, 2012, a large part of Lisbon's consolidated area, with the exception of newly urbanized areas, large facilities and cemeteries, has been classified as an Urban Rehabilitation Area (ARU) of Lisbon, on the basis of the respective Rehabilitation Strategy.
The delimitation of Lisbon's ARU currently in force was amended in 2015(Notice no. 8391/2015).
The Lisbon Municipal Assembly, through Deliberation no. 720/AML/2024, of December 17, approved the extension of the term of the Simple Urban Rehabilitation Operation, corresponding to the Lisbon Urban Rehabilitation Area, up to the limit of 15 years, counting from the date of its approval, on March 20, 2012 (Notice no. 8526/2025/2, of March 31, 2025).
An ARU is a territorially delimited area characterized by buildings, infrastructures, equipment for collective use and urban and green spaces for collective use that are in a situation of insufficiency, degradation or obsolescence, jeopardizing the conditions of use, solidity, safety, aesthetics or healthiness, and which justifies an integrated intervention through an urban rehabilitation operation.
