School transportation
School transport
In Lisbon, school transport is free
In addition to promoting the use of CARRIS buses for commuting to school, in order to create more sustainable habits among the younger generation and reverse the trend towards individual transport, the Municipality of Lisbon, through the Lisbon Municipal Bicycle Train Program, raises awareness and promotes the adoption of active and sustainable mobility habits when commuting to school, training children to use bicycles in a utilitarian and autonomous way in a city context
For students who live less than 1 km from school, walking is encouraged for the benefit of health and connection with the neighborhood.
Support for school transport in specific situations
Provision of adapted transport, limited to the capacity of the existing municipal fleet, for pre-school children and primary and secondary school students with reduced mobility and/or autonomy, with inclusive education measures, in order to enable them to take part in study visits and extra-curricular activities.
Access to this service requires a request to be made by the school groupings/ungrouped schools to the Lisbon City Council/Department of Education.
For the 2023/2024 school year, the City Council has approved the allocation of €20.00 per 1st cycle student in ASE classes A, B and students with learning and inclusion support measures for study visits. This support is transferred to the school group.
Visits as part of the School Passport
As part of the School Passport, in order to facilitate access to the educational services provided by the program's various partners, students from pre-school to the 3rd cycle can enjoy free transport, depending on the availability of the "Alfacinhas" buses.
Other visits
Entities and educational establishments in the public network can also request transportation from the Lisbon City Council fleet. To do so, they need to fill in the online form. They will then be contacted to find out if transportation is available on the date they want.
If there is availability, they will have to apply for support from Lisbon City Council.
