Environmental Quality
Air Monitoring in Lisbon
In Lisbon, there is a network of sensors in various locations that monitor nitrogen dioxide, ozone, PM2.5 and PM10 particles, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide to assess air quality.
Through this monitoring, it has been possible to strengthen the diagnosis of the city in environmental terms, map priority areas for intervention, invest in the public information component and encourage the adoption of behaviors (individual and collective) and more appropriate measures to mitigate the negative effects of potential episodes of atmospheric pollution (air quality and noise) and extreme weather events.
Investment in strengthening the sensor network
The reinforcement - complemented and calibrated by the existing network of fixed air quality measuring stations (APA/CCDR-LVT) and meteorological stations (IPMA) - guarantees interoperability between networks and increases the number of stations and parameters measured. The data obtained in real time, although it makes it possible to see trends, should not be directly comparable with the observations obtained in the reference networks.
Continuing to invest in the city of Lisbon requires keeping track of this monitoring, issuing warnings when atmospheric pollutant information and alert thresholds and adverse weather conditions are exceeded, and taking action to ensure that thresholds or risky weather situations are not exceeded, which could cause damage or harm at different levels, depending on their intensity.
Limit values
Knowing these values makes it possible to analyze moments and places in the city exposed to pollution episodes and/or adverse weather conditions, as well as to issue recommendations and warnings appropriate to each situation, through the development of an alarm component.
- by atmospheric pollutant, legislated for the protection of human health;
- outdoor ambient noise for the Lden and Ln indicators defined in Portuguese legislation;
- defined by parameter, for adverse weather situations (predicted and/or observed).
