The Traffic Schools were created in the 1990s by the Traffic Department of Lisbon City Council, and were later transferred to the Education Department, which manages the school network.
Currently, the schools are managed by the mobility department, as they fit in with its objectives and strategy, which aims to raise awareness among young people about the use of sustainable modes of transport and to sensitize the younger generation to decarbonized and safe travel habits, to the detriment of individual transport.
From 2017 to 2021, the transit schools welcomed 2646 pupils and 96 pre-school classes and 7753 pupils and 284 primary school classes. At 2nd, 3rd and secondary school level, activities were carried out with 3100 students and 130 classes.
