Ecological Structure
Environmental enhancement routes
Climate Walks Coolnoons aim to “cool the city” by promoting microclimatic regulation and improving thermal comfort for residents and visitors, while encouraging sustainable tourism practices.
The creation of Climate Walks in Lisbon comes as part of the European Coolnoons project, which brings together Lisbon and five other Mediterranean cities to develop and test innovative nature-based solutions to tackle the challenges of global warming.
In Lisbon, these routes aim to enhance areas of the city with less tourist pressure, outside the historic center, providing new experiences for visitors and generating economic, social and environmental benefits for local communities.
With this project, Lisbon reaffirms its commitment to improving the quality of life of its residents and visitors, promoting new behaviors for a healthier, more resilient, sustainable, shared and inclusive future.
The initiative is part of the CoolNoons project, co-financed by the European Union, which promotes the enhancement of urban green spaces to mitigate the effects of climate change in Lisbon.
Two case studies were selected in the city:
Monsanto Green Corridor
A nature trail linking the center of Lisbon to the city's largest urban park, with green refuges and panoramic views over Lisbon and the Tagus.
Green Quarter in Alvalade
An urban tour of a neighborhood in transformation, with traditional shops, green areas and shady streets, reflecting the expansion of Lisbon in the 1940s.
