Earthquakes
Throughout history, Lisbon has experienced seismic phenomena which, with greater or lesser intensity, have produced different types of damage, such as the famous 1755 earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 8.7 and intensity of grades IX to X, which produced a great deal of destruction, especially in the downtown area.

A conference promoted by EDP, which aims to bring to the agenda the importance of preparation and the role of individuals and organizations, and their respective coordination, for a seismic event.
1st Critical Infrastructure Protection Course
At the invitation of the National Republican Guard and the European Security College, EPReSist gave a talk to the participants of the training course. In addition to the ReSist Project, the CML's strategy for managing natural risks of geological origin was presented.
The Earth Trembles
The "A Terra Treme" (The Earth Shakes) initiative aims to alert and sensitize the population on how to act before, during and after an earthquake. The ReSist Program held an event for 125 7th graders from the Fernando Pessoa Primary School in Olivais.
Evocation of the 1755 Earthquake
At the invitation of the Olivais Parish Council, EPReSist took part in a session to commemorate the date of the 1755 earthquake.
Antena 1
EPReSist produced a piece with Antena 1, highlighting the need to raise awareness of seismic risk. The piece was broadcast on November 14.
Seminar "Enhancing real estate through seismic resilience"
This event was organized as part of the ReSist Programme, a partnership between Lisbon City Council and the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC). It was aimed at real estate investors and developers, engineers, technical engineers and all professionals involved in building construction. The Round Table discussed various topics related to the seismic reinforcement of the building stock and included Joana Almeida (CML's Councillor for Urbanism), Tiago Eiró (EastBanc Portugal), Carlos Andrade Teixeira (Vanguard Properties), Hugo Santos Ferreira (APPII), João Appleton (A2P Consult), José Manuel Catarino (LNEC) and José Maria Lobo de Carvalho (Conservation Practice). The event also saw the signing of an institutional collaboration protocol between Lisbon City Council and the Portuguese Engineers' Association, with a view to developing joint actions to promote seismic resilience in the city of Lisbon.
Parliament
EPReSist was invited to a hearing promoted by the Assembly of the Republic's "Seismic Prevention and Protection" working group, to present the main measures of the ReSist Program.
Intermunicipal Communities
Between September 22 and November 11, EPReSist held 7 events to present the ReSist Program in the intermunicipal communities: Alentejo Central, Alentejo Litoral, Baixo Alentejo, Lezíria do Tejo, Leiria, Oeste and Médio Tejo. The action allowed the dissemination of the Program, as well as launching the challenge to neighboring municipalities to adopt a strategy to promote seismic resilience.
Technical-Scientific Council meeting - Porto
EPReSist held a meeting with the entities that make up the Technical-Scientific Council and whose headquarters are in Porto. In this context, visits were also made to the facilities of these entities, in particular the Structures Laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
National Geology Congress
EPReSist took part in the National Geology Congress with the presentation of three scientific papers on the results of the GeoSIG, AGEO and ReSist projects.
Seismic safety of national buildings
At the invitation of the National College of Civil Engineering of the Order of Engineers, the ReSist Project Team took part in a conference at the headquarters of the Order of Engineers in Lisbon, with the paper "The need to define a municipal strategy to promote seismic resilience".
A New Path for Housing. Seismic Risk Reduction
At the Assembly of the Republic, at the invitation of the PSD Parliamentary Group, a session was held on Seismic Risk Reduction, with the participation of the ReSist Project Team, which was also attended by the Councillor for Housing, Filipa Roseta.
6th International Risk Congress
This event took place on May 24 and 25, 2023, where the ReSist Project Team was represented.
Engineering - Challenges and Skills" seminar
Event promoted by the Order of Technical Engineers. The ReSist Project Team presented the results obtained to date.
18.2nd National Geotechnical Congress | University of Évora
The event took place at the University of Évora on May 15-17, 2023. The ReSist Project Team presented four papers on the projects it manages: AGEO Project, ReSist Program, GeoSIG Project and GeoSustained Project.
SIL | Lisbon Real Estate Show
The event took place between May 4 and 7 at the Lisbon Congress Center. The ReSist Project Team organized various activities over the four days of the event. These included a simulation of a landslide following an earthquake, and the simulation of falling structural elements using a seismic table. On the last day of the event, a talk was given by the coordinator of the ReSist Program on the subject of "How to protect yourself and how to proceed in the event of an earthquake in the city".
Future Earthquakes in Portugal | Potential Consequences and Solutions
The ReSist Project Team was invited by the PSD Parliamentary Group to a conference that took place at the Lumiar Parish Council premises, on the subject of "Future Earthquakes in Portugal".
Lisbon Urban Rehabilitation Week 2023
The ReSist Project Team was responsible for organizing a parallel session where the Seismic Vulnerability Assessment Report was presented to the public.
5th International Conference on Civil Protection & Science | ISEC
The project team took part in the 5th International Conference on Civil Protection and Sciences, which took place from March 28 to 30 at the ISEC Lisbon Auditorium.
1.2nd BIM/SIG Workshop on linear and geotechnical infrastructures
The Resist Program team took part in the 1st BIM/SIG Workshop on linear and geotechnical infrastructures and presented the work carried out under the GeoSIG Project. The presentation entitled Spatial Data Structures for the Evaluation of Geotechnical Constraints opened the work session held at Fórum Lisboa. Lisbon City Council was represented at the opening session of this international event by the ReSist Program Coordinator, Cláudia Pinto.
II Conference of the ReSist Program - Southern Region of the Order of Engineers
The Southern Regional Council of the College of Civil Engineering (CRC Civil) held the II Conference on the ReSist program, where the measures already implemented were presented - the clarification and optimization of the standards in force, the training actions aimed at the technical community and the awareness and training actions for the general public.
Publicity Session - Alcântara Parish Council
The Alcântara Parish Council organized a publicity session on the Tsunami in the Western Zone of Lisbon. The event was attended by the ReSist Project team.
Seismic Assessment of Single Buildings
The 4 training sessions took place between February 13 and March 3, 2023 and were attended by around 150 technicians from CML and external entities. Objective: presentation and testing of the building resistance index assessment matrix. Participants learned about the construction typologies of Lisbon's buildings and their main characteristics and tested the matrix through inspections carried out on 3 types of buildings.
Portuguese Conference on Structural Engineering / 12th National Congress on Seismology and Seismic Engineering
The Resist project team took part in the 6th Portuguese Conference on Structural Engineering / 12th National Congress on Seismology and Seismic Engineering, which was held at the LNEC Auditorium from November 9 to 11, 2022. A paper was presented entitled: "ReSist Program: a municipal strategy for promoting seismic resilience".
Commemoration of the Anniversary of the 1755 Earthquake
The event was promoted by the Olivais Parish Council and took place in the Auditorium of the Eça de Queirós Secondary School, with free admission. This initiative was attended by guest speakers Paulo Manuel de Almeida Fernandes, Coordinator of the Research Service at the National Museum of Lisbon and Cláudia Narciso Pinto, Coordinator of the ReSist Program.
19.2nd ESRI User Meeting
The ReSist project team was invited to present a talk at the ESRI User Meeting, which took place at Culturgest. The team presented a talk entitled: How to report geological risk using Survey 123? The AGEO app.
European Researchers' Night
The ReSist Project Team ran one of the stands located in Príncipe Real and presented the AGEO Project and the behaviors to adopt in the event of an earthquake.
Seminar of the Order of Technical Engineers
A seminar promoted by the Ordem dos Engenheiros Técnicos (Order of Technical Engineers) was held in LNEC's auditorium with the aim of raising awareness among its members of issues related to seismic vulnerability. The project team presented the ReSist Program.
Portuguese Seismic Engineering Society Summer Seminar 2022
The ReSist project team was invited to participate in the Summer Seminar of the Portuguese Seismic Engineering Society (SPES), which took place on June 30 and July 1, 2022 at the LNEC Auditorium. This event is a joint initiative of SPES and the company PRETENSA. The themes of the event focused on structural monitoring issues, the latest dynamic identification techniques, seismic-resistant rehabilitation interventions and structural system identification techniques.
2.international Conference on Urban Risks
The program's team took part in this international conference, which took place on June 23, 24 and 25 at Culturgest, and presented two papers entitled: "ReSist Programme: a municipality policy to increase seismic resilience in buildings and infrastructures", and "AGEO app: the role of citizens in risk management". Lisbon City Council was represented at the opening session of this international event by Cláudia Pinto.
ReSist Program Conference
On May 30, the Southern Regional Council of the College of Civil Engineers held a conference in the Auditorium of the Southern Region of the Order of Engineers on the RESIST Project | Municipal Seismic Resilience Program. The program team presented its program.
SIL | Salão Imobiliário de Portugal
Presentation of the ReSist Program at SIL | Salão Imobiliário de Lisboa, which took place between May 7 and 11, 2022 at the Lisbon Congress Center. EPReSist organized an activity with the participants and presented talks about the ReSist Program and the AGEO Project during the four days of the event.
Urban Rehabilitation Week
The ReSist Project team was present at the IX Lisbon Urban Rehabilitation Week, promoted by Vida Imobiliária, which took place from April 6 to 8 at the LX Factory, in the Alcântara area, where the ReSist Program was presented.
