Earthquakes
Throughout history, Lisbon has experienced seismic phenomena which, with greater or lesser intensity, have produced different types of damage, such as the famous 1755 earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 8.7 and intensity of grades IX to X, which produced a great deal of destruction, especially in the downtown area.
Actions taken
Soil chart
This chart presents a classification of Lisbon's soils according to the soil types considered in Eurocode 8.
The information available includes the maximum S parameter to be taken into account when calculating the Building Seismic Resistance Assessment. The correspondence between soil classes and the maximum S was defined within the scope of the work carried out by CERU (European Center for Urban Risks) and IST (Instituto Superior Técnico).
Georeferencing of retaining walls and natural slopes
These elements will be included in the map of susceptibility to mass movements on slopes.
Seismic vulnerability assessment report
- Definition of the report's table of contents
- Delivery of the report with the architectural project
- Signature of the report by a technician qualified to sign the stability project
- Definition of the procedural flow to be adopted in urban licensing processes
Expedited assessment of municipal buildings
An assessment was carried out on 50 residential buildings and 50 pieces of equipment, all municipally owned. In addition, an analysis of the architectural and structural characteristics of the buildings located in the municipal districts was carried out, resulting in the classification of the various typologies present and the replication of the results
1500 buildings assessed, 75% of which were in municipal districts
Only 6% in need of seismic reinforcement
Methodology for the expedited assessment of municipal infrastructures
Definition of the basic parameters for an expedited assessment of the seismic vulnerability of municipal urban infrastructures. For this purpose, the Department of Infrastructures and Works of Art/DMMC selected 8 works of art (7 viaducts and 1 overpass)
On the basis of this work, LNEC (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil) developed a standard set of specifications to be used by the relevant departments when launching procedures for the acquisition of services aimed at the rapid assessment of the seismic vulnerability of municipal infrastructures and engineering structures, depending on their type
