A more qualified, inclusive and sustainable city

Over the course of four decades, the Paving and Gardening Schools have played a key role in providing specialised technical training and professional qualifications.

For 40 years they have sought to contribute to the improvement of public spaces, with a focus on preserving Portuguese sidewalk, training professionals in the field of sidewalk, gardens and green spaces, and safeguarding the urban heritage and collective memory of the city of Lisbon.

The schools have also played a role in enhancing the technical knowledge of these two municipal trades, ensuring the transmission of knowledge between generations and reinforcing the dignity and recognition of these professions.

At the same time, they have accompanied the evolution of the city, adapting practices and skills to contemporary urban and environmental challenges, promoting a culture of responsibility, sustainability and innovation in the public space.

Throughout this journey, they have also built a memory, based on documents, testimonies and experiences that reflect the continuous contribution of these structures to a more qualified, inclusive and future-proof city.

Historical Framework and Mission of the Schools

Operating since 1986, the Lisbon City Council's Paving and Gardening Schools have the mission of qualifying professionals by training paving and gardening workers.

Within a framework of lifelong learning, the schools have been expanding their area of intervention, promoting initiatives for the study, research, dissemination, enhancement and protection of the Portuguese sidewalk as Portugal's cultural heritage.

The Portuguese sidewalk and the municipal gardens and green spaces are structural elements of Lisbon's landscape. In addition to their utilitarian function, they carry a high symbolic, cultural and heritage value, the result of know-how passed down between generations.

The Paving School has been decisive in safeguarding and renewing this art, which is recognized nationally and internationally, while the Gardening School has contributed to the sustainable, aesthetic and environmental management of the city's gardens, parks and green areas.
