A Sustainable City
Conserving the environment day by day
Lisbon must take the lead in local climate action and be an example in the implementation of more comprehensive measures and projects that accelerate the energy transition, carbon neutrality, the sustainable expansion of renewable energies, climate adaptation, environmental protection, the safeguarding of natural capital and ecosystem services and the circularity of materials.
The great leap into the future will certainly be in harnessing Lisbon's enormous solar potential. The dissemination of self-consumption production units is a priority in this context, along with the installation of photovoltaic plants and the adoption of highly energy-efficient solutions and technologies in municipal buildings, equipment, fleets and services, which reduce energy consumption and the energy bill.
Strategic areas
In response to the new environmental challenges, Lisbon will implement the city's international commitments to climate mitigation and adaptation - the New Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy and the C40 Climate Leadership Network - and take the lead in these areas, through initiatives such as the Lisbon Commitment, which represents the involvement of the entire city with environmental goals.
the city's commitment to these issues has been recognized through the award of the Green Capital of Europe 2020 prize.
