Biodiversity
Natural area before the Tagus River meets the Atlantic Ocean
The Tagus estuary is one of the largest in western Europe and plays a fundamental role in nature conservation and biodiversity. In its upper zone, the Lisbon National Ecological Reserve and a special protection zone have been created.
Since 2010, Lisbon City Council has been promoting environmental monitoring of the riverfront. This study has several biological components, currently focusing on benthic macroinvertebrate communities, the granulometry and organic matter content of the sediments.
